One short stint is rarely a problem. A pattern of many short stints can be.

Hiring managers mostly worry about two things: whether you'll leave before you become productive, and whether you stayed long enough to deliver something meaningful.

  • One year with a clear reason is fine: better growth, a big pay increase, a layoff, a bad environment, moving to remote work.
  • Several jobs of under a year each can raise questions. Be ready to explain them honestly and positively.
  • Have results to point to. "In 12 months I shipped X and improved Y" makes the length matter much less.

When asked in interviews, keep it short and forward-looking: "I learned a lot there, especially X. I'm looking for more ownership of Y, which this role offers." Never criticise your previous employer.
