It matters less than you think. Pick the one that motivates you, build real things, and learn the basics of the other side along the way.

Frontend first might suit you if:

  • You like seeing results immediately and care about design and user experience.
  • You want to build things you can show friends and employers quickly.
  • Path: HTML and CSS → JavaScript → TypeScript → a framework like React.

Backend first might suit you if:

  • You like logic, data and systems more than visuals.
  • You're interested in APIs, databases, performance and infrastructure.
  • Path: one language (for example JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, C# or Go) → HTTP and REST → SQL and databases → a framework → authentication and deployment.

Either way:

  • Learn Git, the command line, HTTP basics and SQL. Every developer uses them.
  • Build at least one project that has both a frontend and a backend, even a simple one, so you understand how they connect.
  • Check job posts in your target market to see which roles are in demand.

You can always switch later. The skills transfer more than people expect. See how to get your first developer job for the next steps.
